Homage To A Cherished Icon!

Green Park Darlinghurst

1984

At 11pm on Sunday, May 13th the Mother Inferior of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence led a congreation of over 50 faithful in a very moving Memorial Service at the site of the much loved Wedding Chapel at Green Park.

Incense, flowers and dozens of votive candles were offed up in remembrance of the many short and long-term relationships and friendships that were entered into in the evirons of that chapel. The ceremony marked the 40th day after the destruction of the shrine. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence intervened the night of the demolition and saved many relics of the building, including the entrie stainless steel altar-piece. The alter is currently being stored and venerated, in one of the Order's Convent-houses in the inner west.

Six Sydney nuns are currently on a mission in Europe and were unable to be present at the service. Sisters Creme de la Clone, Cum Dancing, Disgrace, Mary Tyler More, Barbarella and Neurotica sent their apologies.

Sisters Third Secret of Fatima, Salomé, Ophelia Dick, Malicious Intent, Outrage, Mother Inferior, Sister Mary Volupta were co-celebrants.

Mother Inferior began by expressing the feelings of many that the Green Park shrine and the Wailing Wall opposite had symbolised a spirit of freedom, solidarity and resourcefulness in a world that is too often hostile, discriminatory and lonely.

So very many acts of love and devotion took place over the years within the walls of the shrine and nearby, that thousands fo people were deeply saddend by the loss. The ceremony gave these people a chance to give voice to their grieving and also to give thanks for the good memories of times spent at the Chapel before its destruction.

After the service, participants stood their lighted candles on the ruined stonework as a silent witness of respect.
