It is with a heavy heart that the Sisters of the Sydney House of the Order of Perpetual Indulgence have had to make the decision to not proceed with either the Zoo Walk nor the Living History Walk during the 2021 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.
These decisions were made in light of the ongoing Covid pandemic that is ravaging the planet at this time; and the need to for us all to look after the health, wellness and welfare of all our Community Members.
The decision to not proceed with the Zoo Walk was the easier decision to make, as it traditionally has been aimed at International and Interstate Visitors to Sydney. But with International Boarders shut, and State Boarders being raised and lowered like a Bride’s Nightie (and in the twinkling of an eye) it made sense to not proceed. This decision also lessens any potential risk to any of the Zoo’s Volunteers and Guides who have been such an integral part of the success of the Zoo Walks over the past thirty years.
The decision not to proceed with the History Walk was a little more difficult, but with the recent outbreaks in the Northern Beaches, and at Berala, there remains some level of uncertainty of the overall safety of Sisters and Participants gathering in such a large number. In addition, we were mindful of our own ages and vulnerabilities.
Apart from the overall disappointment that the cancellation of these activities in 2021, activities that the Sisters enjoy offering and participating in, these two events were also the first scheduled events in our 40th Anniversary Year - a celebration of some significance to any Community Organisation.
Roll on 2022 … The Sisters aim to celebrate with great gusto when it is safer to do so.
In the meantime, stay safe and stay well.
With much love, and endless safe indulgences to you all
Sister Salomé of the 9th Mystic Rhinestone and all Sisters of the Order of Perpetual Indulgence - Sydney.
