[Raymond John Prasad]
26th June 1960 - 24th January 2022
Just after 1am on the morning of 24th January 2022 our beloved friend Mother Mary Desmond 3 3 with a Bloody Good Tan (and a Bankrupt Lifestyle) , the latter an edition to his name in the late 1990s, passed away in Canberra Hospital.
During his time in hospital, Ray was visited by family, his brother Michael and wife Louise, friends, Andrew and Allyn Hunter Marshall, Sten Larsen an ex- partner and friend from Batemans Bay and his colleagues from work, Phillippa and Marcus.
Mother Mary Desmond was admitted to hospital on 12th January 2022 with complications from his treatments for liver cancer and other medical issues arising from the treatments. On 17th January 2022 he was taken off all other medications except for pain relief.
I met Mother Mary Desmond at an afternoon pool party at Kensington on 9th November 1986 and he made an impression – Loud, rude and the life of the party. He seemed to like me, but I had gone to the party with friends and was new to the gay lifestyle, so I declined but I never let him forget that he had tried to pick me up.
I next met Mother Mary Desmond at the same Kensington address where he had moved in several years later. This was 2nd December 1990 and a Nuncheon was being held at the residence. Between 1986 and 1990 Mary Desmond joined the Order of Perpetual Indulgence and in the interim moved to Canberra and established the Canberra House (No longer exists). Hence the title of Mother. This was my introduction to the Sisters and I joined the order as a Postulant, with Mary Desmond as my mentor and my first manifestation was during a Mardi Gras Parade on 4th March 1995.
Since 1990 Mary Desmond in both guises (Sisterly and secular) has become a mentor, confident, flat mate, and best friend.
Friendly, outgoing, generous, chatty, vibrant, and brilliant with any sort of machinery as well as stubborn, rude, loud, and didn’t like being reprimanded for doing something wrong.
I have very strong memories of mainly Mother Mary Desmond and Sister Carmen Get It being wonderfully entertaining at the Midnight Shift’s Retro Nights and feeding the gathered faithful from the Karen Carpenter Memorial Hotdog Stand. I attended occasionally and have fond memories of Mother Desmond grabbing the tongs and getting a hotdog and racing up to the screen and pleading with Karen Carpenter to eat, loudly of course.
A regular attendee of Nuncheons and other manifestations and of course the inspiration and driving force behind the fabulous Rainbow Habits (I still insist that Mother Mary Desmond looked like a Jaffa in the red habit) with the wonderful assistance of Sister Carmen Get It, Sister Salome of the Nineth Mystic Rhinestone, and the wonderful staff at the Mardi Gras Workshop.
Mother Mary Desmond also regularly manifested on his own and would venture forth to engage with the Gathered Faithful at various venues. He would regale the Gathered Faithful with tall tales and true from Mary Desmond’s legendary past and sometimes they would donate funds to the Collective.
In 2013 Mother Mary Desmond was having issues with a neighbour in his housing apartment in Surry Hills and moved to Canberra and joined the RSL (Retired Sisters Lounge).
Mother Mary Desmond will be missed greatly by his friends and the Collective.
