Candlelight Memorial

Eternity Playhouse Darlinghurst

Sunday May 15th 2022

The AIDS Candlelight memorial has been held annually for over 18 years and is a time when members of the community come together and reflect on and remember all those who have died from HIV/AIDS. At the memorial, names are read out by a cross section of the community, including family members, partners, young and old.

The annual AIDS Candlelight Memorial is now held on International Remembrance Day, which is on the 3rd Sunday of May each year.

This year Mother Abyss, Sister Rowena Keeper of the Holy Doyley and Sister Eileen Dover of the Double Cross, joined the memorial service where Sister Rowena read out the names of a number of people who have died from HIV/AIDS.

The Sisters were absolutely thrilled that our much loved and venerated Saint Julie of the Red Thread was our charming Mistress of Ceremonies on the day and the guest speaker was her very close friend and highly regarded and accomplished Professor Basil Donovan, who shared some of his encounters and deeply moving personal stories of HIV patients that he was treating at the height of the AIDs epidemic and some of the safe sex strategies that came out of that time of the health crisis that was unfolding.
