Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Awards Night

Marlborough Hotel King St Newtown

Firday 12th April 2024

The Sisters were delighted to be invited to attend the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Awards night held recently at the Marlborough Hotel in Newtown.
It was a very lively night with many award recipients in attendance.

The OPI was particularly blessed by the receiving of two awards on the night. The first award was given by Mardi Gras to The OPI for 'Best Satirical or Activist Entry - 2024 Winner'

The second one which was entirely unexpected and a huge honour was awarded by the board of the 78ers they selected the OPI for "'The Spirit of 1978'.
The criteria that we met was that they saw our entry as the embodiment of the 78ers of the day. Our honouring of a 78er (Fabian - through the manifesting of the trainer toilet potty seats)
and our use of modern-day art to fearlessly but peacefully co-opt and pervert it into a pointed modern day satirical/political message. All very high praise indeed from our elder peers.

After receiving the awards we were spirited away into a separate room by TikTok hosts/interviewers/influencers to give our thoughts on the awards we had received and some of our challenges in the lead up to our entry in the parade.

A great and humbling night with a fabby party atmosphere and some wonderful speakers who gave a number of poignant accounts of Mardi Gras history for those in attendance to reflect upon.
